Purpose of Degree 1
Degree 1 is the foundational GISD Temple Degree. Through Ministry 101, the learner is introduced to Christism, the study of Sutekh, sacred wisdom, responsibility, and the beginning principles of spiritual leadership. The DIY academic curriculum surrounds that Temple study with age-appropriate literacy, numeracy, empirical observation, history, art, practical skills, and service.
This unit is designed so a Temple, school, family, homeschool collective, or learning circle can teach it with ordinary books, paper, art supplies, locally available nature-study materials, and the learner’s carnelian initiation stone.
Initiation — Carnelian
The initiate brings a carnelian stone as part of Degree 1 initiation. The stone is entered into the learner’s Nous Portfolio and becomes the first common object of interdisciplinary study.
- Observe its color, shape, texture, size, and patterns.
- Draw it from more than one angle.
- Measure it with age-appropriate tools.
- Learn introductory vocabulary: stone, mineral, rock, surface, smooth, rough, translucent, measure.
- Record the Temple meaning or lesson associated with the initiation.
- Keep the carnelian as a continuing symbol and study object throughout the degree pathway.
Degree 1 Learning Domains
Literacy & Communication
Letter-sound relationships, age-appropriate reading, handwriting, complete spoken sentences, listening, retelling, descriptive vocabulary, and short journal entries.
Nous Numeracy
Counting, comparing quantities, addition and subtraction foundations, patterns, basic shapes, measurement, time, money awareness, and mathematical explanation.
Earth & Nature Science
Observation, living and nonliving things, weather, plants, animals, soil, rocks and minerals, asking questions, recording evidence, and distinguishing an observation from an interpretation.
History & Culture
Family and community history, timelines, maps, ancient civilizations at an introductory level, cultural stories, symbols, and respectful comparison of traditions.
Temple Study
Age-appropriate introduction to Christism and Sutekh as taught within Ministry 101, together with responsibility, truthfulness, study, service, leadership, and respectful questioning.
Arts & Making
Drawing, color, rhythm, storytelling, simple model-making, pattern design, music, movement, and creating visual representations of what has been learned.
Master Project — My Carnelian, My World
The learner creates a portfolio project centered on the initiation stone. The project should combine at least five domains: observation, writing or narration, mathematics, earth science, art, geography/history, and Temple reflection.
- Observe: draw and describe the carnelian.
- Measure: record length, width, weight where appropriate, and compare with another object.
- Investigate: learn what carnelian is and how people identify minerals.
- Locate: use a map or globe to identify places associated with carnelian or its historical use.
- Create: make an artwork, model, poem, story, or display inspired by the study.
- Reflect: explain what the stone represents within the learner’s initiation and what responsibility the student accepts as a learner.

Service & Practical Life
Degree 1 service should be concrete and observable: care for a shared space, help organize books or materials, assist with a garden, perform a family or community kindness project, or participate in an age-appropriate Temple service activity. The learner records what was done, who benefited, and what was learned.

Assessment & Advancement
Degree 1 uses mastery-oriented review rather than a single examination. The teacher, parent, or authorized learning guide considers whether the learner can demonstrate age-appropriate growth in communication, numeracy, observation, inquiry, creative expression, responsibility, and service. Portfolio evidence should show both completed work and improvement over time.
- Beginning: performs the skill with substantial guidance.
- Developing: demonstrates the skill with occasional guidance.
- Proficient: demonstrates the skill independently at the expected level.
- Extending: applies the skill independently in a new situation or teaches it to another learner.
When the required portfolio evidence and advancement project are complete, the learner’s Degree 1 work may be presented for appropriate acknowledgment within the Council of Arius according to the standards adopted by the participating Temple or GISD jurisdiction.
